Adults and children 12 years and over: One enema daily, or as directed by a physician. Children under 12 years: Consult a physician. 1. Close off the tubing by sliding clamp to squeeze the tubing together. 2. Use lukewarm water to fill the bag to the 1,500 ml mark, unless otherwise directed by your physician. 3. Check to see that bag opening is closed securely by pressing two sides of seal together. 4. Remove green protective shield from enema tip. Open clamp and allow a small amount of solution to flow through tubing to eliminate air which could cause cramping. Close clamp. The tubing is marked with a black line to indicate the generally accepted length of insertion. Do not insert past this mark unless instructed to do so by a physician or nurse. 6. The enema must be taken while lying down. 7. Hang or hold the bag so that the bottom is about 2 feet above you. 8. Lie on your left side and insert the enema tip into your rectum slowly. Stop when you reach the black line. 9. Release clamp to allow about 1/3 of solution to flow in slowly. Stop flow with clamp. Do not remove tip. 10. Turn onto your back or stomach, whichever is more comfortable. Open clamp and allow another 1/3 of solution to flow in slowly. (Note: If you feel cramp pains, stop the flow for a few minutes. Do not remove tip. Gently massage abdomen until cramps disappear, then resume.) Stop flow with clamp. Do not remove tip. 11. Turn onto your right side and open clamp to allow remaining 1/3 of solution to flow in slowly. Close clamp and remove tip. 12. When urge to evacuate occurs, move to toilet and expel as much of the liquid as you can. 13. If you have been instructed to take tap water enemas until clear, repeat the procedure until liquid expelled is clear.
